Conservative, color, texture agent … The list of ingredients is often long on the labels of foods sold in supermarkets. Learn to recognize the additives that can play a role in the development of cancer to better avoid them.
If today is something to beware of everything we eat, some foods and beverages are revealed very carcinogenic. And there are some surprises! Here are some cancer-causing foods that you must avoid.
1. Titanium dioxide, or E171
E171 is a food and cosmetic colorant. According to the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES), E171 fulfills the criteria to be classified as “suspected carcinogen by inhalation for humans”.
2. Potassium and sodium nitrites
Potassium nitrite (E249) and sodium nitrite (E250) are both additives used to color and preserve food. They’re also used to limit the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), “Nitrite in food […] can contribute to the formation of a group of compounds known as nitrosamines, some of which are cancer-causing.
3. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
It’s no surprise: GMOs are harmful to your health. They are present in most food derivatives based on conventional corn, soy, rice, or rapeseed. Prefer, therefore, purely natural products produced without biotechnology.
4. Processed meats
Some food contains preservative chemicals such as meats, bacon, sausage, and other hot dogs. These chemicals make them look fresh longer, but they can also cause cancer. “Sodium nitrite and Potassium nitrate have been linked to increasing the risk of colon cancer.” You might as well choose your products based on uncured meat and without nitrates.
5. Popcorns in the microwave
They are packed with chemicals that can cause infertility, but also cancer of the liver, testes, and pancreas. So prepare your old-fashioned popcorn yourself, it’s better.
6. Soft drinks
Soft drinks are known for their refreshing side, but also for their health damage. Sugar packed, food chemicals, and dyes, these drinks acidify the body and nourish the cancer cells.
7. Diet foods and beverages
They’re worse than traditional soft drinks. Health foods are loaded with aspartame, which can cause a range of illnesses, including congenital disabilities and cancer. Avoid it.
8. Refined white flours
It is one of the most important ingredients in processed foods. However, there is a problem with its excess carbohydrate content. “Regular consumption of refined carbohydrates has been strongly related to a 220 % increase in breast cancer in women.”
9. Refined sugars
Refined sugars tend to rapidly increase insulin levels and nurture the growth of cancer cells.
10. Conventional fruits

15. Sweet foods
Many studies have established a correlation between high consumption of sugars and cancer. Especially, sugary foods are dangerous for pancreas and breast. It would be hasty to demonize sugar and ask people to stop eating it. In some products, sugar replaces with fructose or glucose-fructose syrup, found particularly in jams, chocolate bars, or industrial pastries.
16. Hydrogenated oils
Hydrogenated oils are often used to preserve foods and to keep them in good condition for as long as possible. But if they are so often criticized, it is because these hydrogenated oils can be the cause of many diseases, including cancers.
